What is a free boiler scheme?

In order to lower the UK’s energy consumption and give low-income households subsidies to help them increase the energy efficiency of their houses, the free boiler program was introduced in January 2013. The biggest utilities in the UK provided the majority of the funding for Free boiler.

The Home Heating Cost Reduction Obligation (HHCRO), which is the main component of ECO, includes money for the free boiler program.

Obligation to Reduce Home Heating Costs (HHCRO):

Private households who receive certain means-tested subsidies are eligible for free boiler and insulation grants through the Home Heat Cost Reduction Obligation. It seeks to decrease fuel poverty among low-income households by generating heat as effectively as possible and preventing it from fleeing the house.

Eligible benefits:

The qualifications for receiving a free boiler grant can vary. First, a permanent resident of the property must be receiving one of the advantages listed below, such as:

  • Kiddie tax credit
  • Kid benefits (with a qualifying household income)
  • Employer tax credit
  • Disability Living stipend
  • The pension credit
  • Job-seekers’ compensation

Additionally necessary qualifications:

There are additional requirements for each of the aforementioned. The most crucial of which is that the combined household income of all residents who are of working age must not be higher than the permitted maximum. Depending on the benefits being received and the number of people and kids residing in the property, this will change. The government determined that this amount was low enough to be eligible for financial aid.

Second, the property needs to be large enough to benefit from the installation of such measures. Unfortunately, the carbon emissions saved as a result of replacing a boiler inside a flat are not thought to be big enough to warrant the financing necessary to pay for such work.

Last but not least, the building must currently have a low-efficiency boiler. According to their energy efficiency, all boilers are graded. Most contemporary units operate at an efficiency of about 90%, losing only 10% of their output during the conversion of fuel to heat. Most likely, a boiler installed roughly 10 years ago will be 65–80% efficient. Therefore, the cost of replacing this old boiler with a new one will be justified by the carbon reductions. Making the upgrade eligible for the free boiler program.
